Wildlife Institute of India के एक ताज़ा वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन में यह सामने आया है कि गंगा में पाई जाने वाली मछलियों में 39 प्रकार के ज़हरीले रसायन (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals – EDCs) मौजूद हैं जो डॉल्फ़िन के स्वास्थ्य और प्रजनन क्षमता के लिए घातक हैं।

India’s national aquatic animal, the Gangetic dolphin, is now battling toxicity. A new scientific study by the Wildlife Institute of India reveals that 39 types of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in the fish of the Ganga are severely harming the dolphin’s health and reproductive abilities.

अध्ययन में पाया गया कि डॉल्फ़िन जिन मछलियों को खाती है, वे पहले ही इन रसायनों से संक्रमित हैं।

इनमें शामिल हैं – प्रतिबंधित कीटनाशक DDT और Lindane, औद्योगिक रसायन DEHP और DnBP, और भारी धातुएँ जैसे पारा, आर्सेनिक और कैडमियम।

The dolphins are being poisoned through their diet, as the fish they consume are contaminated with banned pesticides like DDT and Lindane, industrial chemicals like DEHP and DnBP, and heavy metals including mercury, arsenic, and cadmium.

वैज्ञानिकों ने चेतावनी दी है कि यदि त्वरित कार्रवाई नहीं की गई तो भारत में भी यांग्त्ज़े नदी की डॉल्फ़िन की तरह गंगा डॉल्फ़िन भी इतिहास बन सकती है।

Scientists warn that if swift action is not taken, the Gangetic dolphin could meet the same fate as China’s Yangtze River dolphin — now extinct due to human interference.

1957 से अब तक गंगा डॉल्फ़िन की आबादी में 50% से अधिक की गिरावट आई है, और उनके निवास क्षेत्र में लगभग 25% की कमी।

Since 1957, the Gangetic dolphin population has dropped by over 50%, and its habitat has shrunk by nearly 25%.

गंगा प्रदूषण के मुख्य स्रोत हैं:

• कृषि रसायनों का बहाव

• औद्योगिक अपशिष्ट (विशेषकर कपड़ा व चमड़ा उद्योग)

• अव्यवस्थित कचरा प्रबंधन

• बढ़ता धार्मिक पर्यटन

The main sources of Ganga pollution include:

• Agricultural runoff

• Untreated industrial waste (especially from textile and leather industries)

• Poor solid waste management

• Rising pressure from religious tourism

एंडोक्राइन बाधक रसायन (EDCs) लंबे समय तक जल में बने रहते हैं और डॉल्फ़िन के हार्मोन सिस्टम पर गहरा असर डालते हैं।

EDCs remain in the environment for long periods and dangerously disrupt the hormonal systems of mammals like dolphins.

इस शोध के अनुसार सरकार को चाहिए कि:

• इन 39 रसायनों को निगरानी कार्यक्रम में शामिल करे

• एक राष्ट्रीय नदी प्रदूषण नियंत्रण योजना बनाए

• स्थानीय समुदायों और वैज्ञानिकों को संरक्षण अभियान से जोड़े

The study recommends that the government:

• Include these 39 chemicals in river monitoring frameworks

• Form a national plan to control chemical pollution

• Involve local communities and scientists in conservation strategies.

हालाँकि गंगा डॉल्फ़िन को वन्यजीव संरक्षण अधिनियम, 1972 की अनुसूची-I में संरक्षण मिला है, लेकिन कानूनी सुरक्षा तभी कारगर होगी जब ज़मीन पर ठोस प्रदूषण नियंत्रण हो।

Though the dolphin is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, legal protection is only meaningful if it’s backed by real pollution control on the ground.

जल शक्ति मंत्रालय द्वारा हाल ही में एक नया डेटा पोर्टल लॉन्च किया गया है, जिससे पारिस्थितिक जानकारी तक आसान पहुंच और जागरूकता बढ़ेगी।

The Ministry of Jal Shakti has recently launched a data portal to improve access to ecological information and aid conservation efforts.

महात्मा गांधी ने गंगा को “संस्कृति की जीवनरेखा” कहा था। अब समय आ गया है कि श्रद्धा के साथ-साथ विज्ञान, पर्यावरण और सार्वजनिक जिम्मेदारी को भी इस सांस्कृतिक धरोहर के संरक्षण में जोड़ा जाए।

Mahatma Gandhi called Ganga the lifeline of Indian culture. The time has come to combine devotion with science, ecology, and public responsibility to preserve this sacred river.
